I reread The Hunger Games again a couple of months ago, and the last sentence in this particular passage caught my attention:
“My father got to know my mother because on his hunts he would sometimes collect medicinal herbs and sell them to her shop to be brewed into remedies. She must have really loved him to leave her home for the Seam. I try to remember that when all I can see is the woman who sat by, blank and unreachable, while her children turned to skin and bones. I try to forgive her for my father’s sake. But to be honest, I’m not the forgiving type.” ~ Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games
Immediately I thought, Katniss must have a number 9 in her numerology chart. The number 9s in numerology usually have issues with their original family and find it hard to forgive those who have hurt them before.
I realized that many other things about Katniss also remind me of the energies surrounding the number 9:
- she’s a loner who doesn’t trust or make friends easily,
- she feels completely responsible for the well-being of her family (including the people she considers her family – like Gale and his family, and later Rue, Peeta, Haymitch, and more),
- she intimidates others without realizing it and has absolutely no idea of her effect on other people,
- and finally, she’s looked at by the people as a leader and gets thrown into a leadership position that she doesn’t want.
“I think….you still have no idea. The effect you can have.”
I was curious, and with the last film of the series, Mockingjay Part 2, coming out soon, I decided to calculate Katniss’ chart to see what her numbers were, and sure enough her Power Name number is 9!
**SPOILER ALERT** Do not read any further if you haven’t read the books or watched the movies, the information below may contain spoilers.
Katniss’ Numerology Chart
Based on her name Katniss Everdeen, and her birthday May 8, I was able to calculate five numbers in her chart, but since Suzanne Collins didn’t mention in which year Katniss was born, I wasn’t able to get the sixth number, which would’ve been her Life Path Number, and usually the most important number in a person’s chart.
Still, the other numbers on her chart were really interesting in how they affirmed the person she is. Here are the numbers in her chart:
Power Name Number – 9
Soul Number – 3
Personality Number – 6
Birth Day Number – 8
Attitude Number – 4
We’ve already talked about the energies of the number 9 and how they relate to Katniss, now let’s see about the other numbers.
Soul Number 3
The Soul Number 3 can be a great performer, and you might think at first that Katniss isn’t a good performer at all – because she really sucked when she was told what to say as the Mockingjay – but the number 3 is also someone who is very expressive and charismatic, and when they really believe in something and tell you about it, you will be sold.
We all know that Katniss doesn’t perform well when someone else tells her what to say or how to act, but when she speaks and acts from her beliefs, that’s when we all believe her and believe in her. There were so many scenes in the book when she moved us to tears with her impassioned speeches and actions, I’m tearing up right now just remembering them.
“Fire is catching! And if we burn, you burn with us!”
Personality Number 6
The Personality Number 6 are nurturers and often “parent” to everyone else, and as you have probably already realized, Katniss parents her own mother and sister. Not only that, she finds it hard to do what others tell her to do because she is opinionated and believes she knows what’s best for herself and the people she loves. The 6s are loyal and fiercely protective of their home and family.
“You’re still trying to protect me. Real or not real,” he whispers.
“Real,” I answer. “Because that’s what you and I do, protect each other.”
They are also sensitive to criticism, and we know how hurt Katniss gets when she hears, at different times, Peeta, Haymitch, and Gale, talking about what she perceives as her weaknesses, and how devastated she was when Peeta was hijacked and she realizes that he’s finally seeing her for all her darkness.
“Gale didn’t say, “Katniss will pick whoever it will break her heart to give up,” or even “whoever she can’t live without.” Those would have implied I was motivated by a kind of passion. But my best friend predicts I will choose the person “I can’t survive without.” There’s not the least indication that love, desire, or even compatibility will sway me. I’ll just conduct an unfeeling assessment of what my potential mates can offer me. As if in the end, it will be the question of whether a baker or a hunter will extend my longevity the most. It’s a horrible thing for Gale to say, for Peeta not to refute. Especially when every emotion I have has been taken or exploited by the Capitol or the rebels. At the moment, the choice would be simple. I can survive just fine without either of them.”
–
“You know, you could live a thousand lifetimes and not deserve him.”
–
“All those months of taking it for granted that Peeta thought I was wonderful are over. Finally, he can see me for who I really am. Violent. Distrustful. Manipulative. Deadly. And I hate him for it.”
Birthday Number 8 & Attitude Number 4
Number 8s and 4s are similar in that security are very important to them. In the modern world, the 8s need to know that they have financial security, and the 4s need to make sure that their family is provided for. They are both hard workers, and are often workaholics.
In District 12, Katniss feels the need to be the provider for both her family and Gale’s, and is always working hard to provide; hunting for food, gathering plants and herbs, bartering and doing business with people in the Hob, selling their products to the people who will buy them.
Katniss needs to work and provide so badly that she continues hunting after she’s won the Hunger Games the first time, even though she didn’t need to (Gale wouldn’t take her money, but Gale’s mother Hazelle, had no problems doing so). And when District 12 was destroyed and all her people moved to District 13, one of her conditions of being the Mockingjay was that she was able to continue hunting game with Gale.
It is so much a part of her identity that she doesn’t know who she would be if she couldn’t provide.
“My mother and Prim would live there with me. No more fear of hunger. A new kind of freedom. But then…what? What would my life be like on a daily basis? Most of it has been consumed with the acquisition of food. Take that away and I’m not really sure who I am, what my identity is. The idea scares me some.”
Both these numbers also have a no-nonsense attitude, sometimes being blunt to the point of rudeness, though they might not always realize that they offend other people. We know Katniss isn’t always the most lovable of persons, and we know she can be pretty blunt sometimes too.
“Look, if you wanted to be babied you should have asked Peeta.”
–
“What about Gale?”
“He’s not a bad kisser either,” I say shortly.
“And it was okay with both of us? You kissing the other?” He asks.
“No. It wasn’t okay with either of you. But I wasn’t asking your permission,” I tell him.
Peeta laughs again, coldly, dismissively. “Well, you’re a piece of work, aren’t you?”
There is a lot more to numerology and the numbers, and I’m sure if we had Katniss’ birth year, we could’ve found out a lot more about how the energies of the numbers in her chart coincide with her character and personality in the book.
I am a numerologist in real life and I have always found it to be accurate, but I am amazed at how accurate it turned out to be for a book character too! Of course, Katniss is more than just a book character to me, but it’s still interesting to see numerology at work here. =)
