Samhain
Samhain, pronounced sowen, falls on October 31st or November 1st in some cultures. It is more commonly known as Halloween, and is also called All Hallow’s Eve, All Saints Day, Day of the Dead, and Summer’s End. It is the third and last of the three Harvest Festivals – the Nuts and Berries Harvest, the first two being Lughnasa as the First Harvest – the Grain Harvest, and Mabon as the Second Harvest – the Fruit Harvest.
Samhain is believed to be the time when the veils between the worlds of the living and dead are at their thinnest, which allows the spirits of the dead to visit the living. The Halloween tradition of dressing up in costumes began from the belief that it would confuse the spirits and afford the living some protection from malevolent spiritual beings. In Mexico, it is celebrated as the Day of the Dead – Dia de los Muertos – and it is a day for remembering and honoring the dead.
For Celtic traditions, Samhain marks the new year as well as the beginning of winter. It is considered to be one of the most powerful nights for divination and for performing spells and rituals. It is also a good time for personal reflection and committing to self-improvement.
Rituals
If you would like to observe Samhain with a ritual, here are a few simple ones you can perform:
- Set up your Samhain altar with late autumn fruits like pumpkins, apples, and squashes. You can also decorate it with various nuts and berries to celebrate the harvest of nuts and berries.
- If you like, you can also celebrate and remember your dearly departed by placing their favorite foods and items on your altar as offerings.
- Since the veils between worlds are at its thinnest, it is also a good time to try communicating with your dearly departed. One of the best ways is to channel their messages through automatic writing.
- Go on a walk outdoors with your loved ones and family to pick any berries and nuts you find on your walk.
- Dress up in scary costumes and go trick-or-treating!
- Take some time to focus on self-reflection and make a list of things you would like to work on for the Celtic new year.
- And of course, on one of the most powerful nights for divination, you can perform a divination ritual with the Samhain Tarot Spread below!
