Litha

Litha falls on June 21-22, and is also known as Midsummer or the Summer Solstice. It is the longest day of the year, a day that marks the peak of the Sun God’s power. Each day after Litha will start to get progressively shorter, but on this day, we celebrate the most powerful day of the Sun.

The name Litha is said to have come from the Old English word Líða that translates to the months that roughly corresponds with June and July.

On the longest day of the year, we celebrate the abundance of light and fire, its life-giving properties, as well as the strength and virility of the masculine. We honor the Sun God on this day by celebrating with his most powerful tool – the element of fire. Fire is both destructive and creative. It can burn and purify. It is transformative – it can turn raw ingredients into nourishing food. Its heat can warm, or it can kill.

Rituals

If you would like to observe Litha with a ritual, here are a few simple ones you can perform:

  • Light a bonfire outside at noon when the Sun is at its highest point in the sky. (Please be safe and adhere to fire safety rules.)
  • Alternatively, you can light a candle indoors and leave it burning throughout the day. Or light several candles throughout the day. (Again, please adhere to fire safety rules when dealing with fire rituals.)
  • Decorate your altar with the colors of the sun – red, yellow, orange, and gold. Flowers of the sun’s colors would be wonderful additions to your altar decoration as well – like sunflowers, chamomile, and daisies.
  • The oak is a significant aspect of the Litha celebrations because it represents strength and endurance. Find an oak tree and express your appreciation for it in any way you want. Ask for some of its strength and endurance to be transferred to you.
  • And of course, here is a divination ritual we can do with this Litha Tarot Spread below.
