Choice and The Lovers in Tarot

Posted October 13, 2021 by Hazellie Wong in Tarot and Numerology, Tarot Basics / 0 Comments

October is the Universal Month of 6 for love and family, and the number 6 card in the Tarot Major Arcana is The Lovers. I like to give the excus…uh, reason that I buy so many tarot decks is because of the different depictions of the same cards in a variety of decks give me a better understanding of their meanings.

When I first started learning tarot, I was curious as to why the meaning for the Lovers card included choice. Over time, I realized that choice and love goes hand in hand. There’s a whole big discussion that could come out of this, but basically, I personally believe that we do choose who (and what) we love, and that this choice is a basic human right as long as it is consensual to all parties involved. And for the record, I will fight to defend this right for every person.

A lot of my understanding about love and choice came by gradually, with not insignificant help from reading tarot for different groups of people. The depictions of the Lovers card in different decks add an extra element of depth to it as well.

From the image above, clockwise from top left, The Lovers, from:

  • The Radiant Rider-Waite
  • Shadowscapes Tarot
  • White Numen Tarot
  • The Wizards’ Tarot

We have four different decks depicting the Lovers, and while there is a lot of underlying symbolism in each of the cards, let’s keep it simple for now.

Love can be traditional. Love can be between same sex couples, opposite sex couples, non binary couples. Love can be non-sexual and platonic. Love can be non-sexual and romantic. Love can be familial. Love can be for the pursuit of your passions and interests.

The bottom line is, love is a choice. Granted, some of us have easier choices and some of us have more difficult choices, but regardless, it is a choice, and it is our choice. Choose the lover you want, the family you want, the friends you want, the lifestyle you want…Choose a life you love, filled with love.

Have Tarot Will Party by Jenna Matlin – Book Review

Have Tarot Will Party by Jenna Matlin – Book Review

I have loved Jenna Matlin a long time, so this review might be just a little bit biased, but to be fair, I started loving Jenna because of the gems she shares in this book and how much they helped me when I first started out as a professional tarot reader. I was a relatively new reader at the time, and although I’d done plenty of one-to-one readings, I’d never done groups, parties, or events. Jenna had a course about doing tarot events, which I enrolled in, and which was incredibly helpful! It was full of practical tips, creative ideas, […]

The Queen of Pentacles for Easter

The Queen of Pentacles for Easter

Happy Easter, my loves! I’ve recently gotten a few new decks (yayy!) and it’s been difficult to decide which decks to use (a great problem!), but I decided to go with the Cat Tarot for today’s card pull. I love the Queen of Pentacles for today’s card pull. Easter is a celebration of resurrection and rebirth; with loads of rabbits and eggs as a symbolism of fertility and abundance. The Queen of Pentacles also represents fertility and abundance, a very apt card for today! Although the cards in tarot have the same general meaning across all decks, there is always […]

“Tarot is Evil” and Other Lies You’ve Been Told

“Tarot is Evil” and Other Lies You’ve Been Told

In recent times, tarot is becoming more widespread and acceptable around the world. More people are starting to understand tarot as a very useful divination and self-help tool. However, it is still often misunderstood and misrepresented, especially in the media, in fiction and on the small and big screens. Fiction is about creating drama, so of course a story about someone dying from getting their cards read is much more interesting than a story about someone who got their lives together after a tarot reading. That’s not very helpful to the regular layperson who is interested in learning and finding […]

Phoenix Rising – Death Brings New Life

Phoenix Rising – Death Brings New Life

A few days ago, I sent out a newsletter explaining why I’d been silent for more than a month. Some of you might already know that my father had been sick and passed away at the end of February. I spent some time grieving and just working through stuff, and I wrote in my newsletter about how my father’s death made me think about how I was living my own life. Some of you emailed me back expressing your condolences and asking me to take care, thank you for that. I also got some feedback that what I wrote about […]

Communication: The 3 of Swords in Relationships

Communication: The 3 of Swords in Relationships

When it comes to relationships, the single most important thing for it to thrive, in my opinion, is communication. Regardless of whether it is a romantic relationship, a platonic one, a relationship between parent and child, boss and employee, client and agent, or any other kind of relationship, communication is what allows the relationship to grow. Relationships thrive on good communication, and suffer greatly when there is lack of communication. I tend to incorporate numerology into my tarot interpretations, and in numerology, the number 3 represents communication. In tarot, Swords are the element of Air, and Air corresponds with communication as well, […]

Comparing the Three of Swords from different decks

Comparing the Three of Swords from different decks

One of the things I love most about collecting tarot decks is the subtle differences of how different decks interpret some of the cards. Artwork is one of the things I look at when deciding to buy a new deck, but the story of the deck is really important too. If you look at the cards below, I have the Three of Swords from three different decks; Shadowscapes Tarot, Dark Fairytale Tarot, and for comparison, the Rider-Waite-Smith, which the first two decks are derived from. Now, the Shadowscapes Tarot is sometimes described as a whimsical deck, in that it’s quite […]

The Challenges and Rewards of Being A Tarot Reader

The Challenges and Rewards of Being A Tarot Reader

Recently I came across this brilliant post, Ten Things to Never Say to Your Tarot Reader,  about the ignorant and disrespectful statements some people have made to tarot readers. I’ve been pretty lucky in that most people I’ve read for have been wonderful people who genuinely seek answers, but there have been a few I’ve come across that have been disrespectful. Once, someone even said that I probably use the readings to scare my clients into buying protection spells or talismans or some other such thing! If I was that kind of witch, I would’ve already put a curse on him. […]
