Ostara

Ostara falls on March 21-22, and is also known as the Spring Equinox or Vernal Equinox. It is the day when there is perfect equilibrium between day and night, when there is equal length of light and dark before the days start becoming longer again. It also marks the first day of spring.

Ostara is so named after the Germanic goddess of fertility and rebirth, Eostre/Ostara, who is said to have the head and shoulders of a hare. The hare and the egg are prominent symbols in Ostara as both the hare and the egg represent fertility. The egg brings forth new life, and the hare is one of the rare animals in which superfetation can occur, that is, they are able to get pregnant while already pregnant, hence the reason they are symbols of abundance and fertility.

The Christian observation of Easter takes its cue from this pagan festival and celebrates it with symbols of the eggs and the hare as well.

Rituals

If you would like to observe Ostara with a ritual, here are a few simple ones you can perform:

  • The most obvious ritual is to decorate eggs and hold an Ostara/Easter egg hunt. Or alternatively, you can decorate your house with these colorful eggs. If you have an altar, set a few eggs on your altar to call forth abundance and fertility.
  • Bury one or two raw eggs in your garden to ensure the fertility and growth of your garden plants. If you are trying to get pregnant, put a fresh raw egg under or beside your bed for 7 days, but make sure to discard it before it spoils or it will start to smell.
  • Decorate your house with spring flowers in every room; crocuses, daffodils, tulips, lily of the valley, primroses, and hyacinths are some good choices.
  • Baking hot cross buns are a great way to celebrate Ostara. The cross on top of the bun represents the balance of day and night, and also the four directions and their elements. Here is a recipe for some yummy hot cross buns!
  • And of course, one of the best and fun rituals we can do this Ostara is a tarot reading with the Ostara Tarot Spread below.
